EL TECOLOTE
The cover illustration for El Tecolote’s Vol. 49 No. 08 issue was created to honor Jessica Nicole Alva, a 35-year-old Indigenous mother of six from San Francisco’s Bayview, who was tragically killed in an incident of domestic violence. Her death serves as a stark reminder of the violence faced by Indigenous women and the systemic neglect, underreporting, and lack of investigation surrounding such cases. The artwork was inspired by the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) Movement, aiming to shed light on this ongoing crisis.
